Iceland Named Safest Country to Visit in 2025
Travelers are drawn to Iceland for its unique landscapes and Northern Lights. Adding to its allure, the country was just named the No. 1 safest country to visit in 2025 by travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway.
Iceland beckons travelers with its famed hot springs like the Blue Lagoon and is a noteworthy destination for gazing at Northern Lights. But beyond the natural spectacles, the Nordic country may also appeal to travelers who prioritize safety. That’s because Iceland was just named the safest country to travel to in 2025, according to a new report released today from the insurance company Berkshire Hathaway. Not only that, but Reykjavik—the capital of Iceland and the country’s largest city—was also named the safest city to travel to in 2025, according to the same report from Berkshire Hathaway.
Safety Rankings
In last year’s safest countries ranking, Iceland held the No. 9 position. In the 2025 rankings, Iceland reclaimed its position as the safest destination in the world for the first time in three years, despite a volcanic activity close to the small town of Grindavík, which is about 30 miles southwest of Reykjavik.
Australia and Canada, now in second and third place respectively, have been climbing in the rankings over the past several years and are now regulars on the top 10 list.
Changes in City Rankings
As for cities, Honolulu, Hawaii, which was ranked No. 1 on last year’s list, slipped to No. 13 this year.
Determining Safe Destinations
Safety is top of mind for many travelers, especially given the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. When it comes to choosing safe destinations, travelers can also be mindful of the U.S. State Department’s travel advisories.
Safety can mean a number of things to different travelers, including being free of terrorism, sheltered from severe weather events, having solid infrastructure, and ensuring safety for underrepresented groups.
Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection puts out its “Safest Destinations” report annually. The company began surveying travelers on their attitudes towards safety nine years ago, and began compiling lists of the world’s safest places in 2018.
